Infographic: The Kings of Israel

Proverbs 19:21 says: Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.

The monarchial rule in the nation of Israel is a great picture of man’s complete inability to rule himself. God intended for the nation of Israel to demonstrate to all people how glorious it can be to live under the government of God.

But when the people decided they wanted to be ruled by a king like the nations around them the results were tragic. Three kings later the most powerful and prosperous kingdom on earth would be split. And in less than 200 years the Northern kingdom was enslaved by Assyria and the people of Judah were taken into Babylonian captivity a couple hundred years after that.

Effectively when man decided to rule himself, he ruled himself straight into captivity which is a pretty accurate picture of the entire human condition.

God would use this period in history to show that Jesus is the only one worthy to rule and the failed kingdoms of Israel would point to the ultimate King sitting on the throne.

The graphic below illustrates the rulers of Israel, the years of their reign, how well they reigned and the passages in the Bible where their stories are told. The graphic also forms a subtle cross which is a picture of the earthy kingdom foreshadowing the coming King.
