Soccer is Ridiculous

Soccer will never become a mainstream professional sport in the United States.

I’m not saying this because we lost or because I’m a soccer hater. I was really excited for the World Cup. In fact I recorded the US games and shut out the sports world those days so I wouldn’t find out what happened until I was able to watch them. But when so much of the game rests in the hands of an official I have a problem with it.

Sure there are bad calls in other sports but in those sports there are multiple opportunites to legitimately score. If you go down a goal in a soccer match (much less the World Cup) you can pretty much forget about winning. That is why the missed calls are so frustrating. Why should I invest my valuable time to see some guy fall down and clutch his face in agony after being tapped on the shin? I guess the Americans should learn how to dive better…

In my mind your web site is light years ahead of the rest of the blogging world. The phrase ‘cutting edge of societal evolution’ comes to mind. Where else would I get such an opportunity to continue the commentary on what has amounted to nothing more than World Cup hype. I liken it to going to the doctor and saying ‘ahh’ while he shoves a tongue depresser down your throat. You didn’t go to the doctor complaining of a sore throat to begin but you got it anyway. All this World Cup coverage is a waste of perfectly good broadcasting space if you ask me. Ironically, you can bet the entire nation would be jumping on the ‘futbol’ band wagon had the U.S. made it any farther. One last puzzling note: no one playing in the World Cup actually wears a ‘cup’

Funny thing, is that I was ready to dive right on the bandwagon. If they would have given us something to cheer for… Fact is, they probably set professional soccer back about 8 years. After the last World Cup they had momentum and the buzz was slowly building. The problem is that the buzzz turned into zzzzz.
